WSCF Copyright: Thine is the Glory
The World Student Christian Federation is the owner of the English hymn text for "Thine is the Glory". The story of how the hymn text came to be owned by WSCF follows.
A Toi la Gloire
The original French text 'A Toi la Gloire' is by Rev. Edmond Budry (1864-1932), who was for 35 years pastor of the Free Church in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. He wrote the texts of over 60 hymns, which appeared in various French hymnals.
'A Toi la Gloire' appeared in 1885 in the first edition of Chants Evangéliques a hymnbook published in Lausanne, Switzerland. The melody was taken from Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabaeus. 'A Toi la Gloire' is today the best known and most often sung of Budry's hymns.
Cantate Domino
In 1922 the decision was taken by WSCF to compile a hymnbook for use by WSCF's members around the world. 'A Toi la Gloire' was included in WSCF's hymnbook Cantate Domino published in 1925 in the original French and in German and English translations.
Budry granted WSCF the permission to authorise anyone to reproduce the French version.
The English translation of this hymn was commissioned by WSCF and undertaken by Richard Birch Hoyle.
Richard Birch Hoyle
The Rev'd Richard Birch Hoyle (1875-1939) was a personal friend of Miss Suzanne Bidgrain who was the first editor of Cantate Domino. From 1922 onwards Miss Bidgrain asked friends to help with translations, these people included Mr. Birch Hoyle. 'Thine is the Glory' is one of six hymns Mr. Birch Hoyle translated for the first edition of Cantate Domino.
Mr Birch Hoyle, in common with the other translators, was happy to be of service in this pioneer effort to publish an ecumenical hymnbook.
